finn mccools

August 6th, 2008 Loser No comments

CENTER CITY. As the third quarter of ArenaBowl XXII came to a close yesterday afternoon, the televisions above Finn McCool's bar at 12th and Sansom streets featured a Canadian tennis match and a WNBA game.

McCool's wasn't the only downtown bar lacking fanfare over Jon Bon Jovi's Philadelphia Soul, which hung on for a 59-56 victory and the franchise's first championship in five years.

“We put the sound up and everything, but it’s been empty,” said Sean Heaton, manager of Fox and Hound at 15th and Spruce streets, where only a handful of tables were occupied during the game and diners barely glanced at the big-screen TVs.

Northeast Philadelphia resident Joe Stalmaster, who said he's been to five Soul games in the past, said he keeps track of every professional sports team in the city.

“I cared when the Kixx won,” said Stalmaster, a self-proclaimed fan of “Philadelphia itself.”

Despite his interest, Stalmaster passed up watching yesterday's game to celebrate his friend Michele Dolan's 22nd birthday.

Five seasons since Bon Jovi formed the team hoping to capitalize on a loyal sports fan base, some are debating whether the Arena League title counts as a “real championship.”

While fans of the city's four major sports teams have agonized over the long-running futility of the Phillies, Eagles, Sixers and Flyers, the city's teams in lesser-known indoor soccer, lacrosse and minor league hockey have won numerous championships in the last two decades.

Ryan McFadden and three friends were not so sure what to think of the Soul victory as they watched the game — which was televised on nationally — as they had a few drinks at Jose Pistolas.

“This is at least the most fun I’ve had since last night,” McFadden quipped.

900 rally drivers to pay tribute to Colin McRae

August 4th, 2008 Loser No comments

A STAGGERING 900-plus Subaru owners, including some from Poland, have said they plan to take part in a special tribute to Colin McRae.

Subaru owners are planning to remember the late former world rally champion with a tribute weekend.

The McRae Gathering will see Subaru owners meet at Lanark on August 30 before starting on a long distance drive to Banbury, home of Prodrive, the Subaru team which ran Colin’s championship winning Impreza.

The event organisers said this week that they have around 880 registrations with more coming in daily.

These figures did not include a Polish contingent, nor a group of Scots from the central belt who registered at the start and had yet to be added to the database.

This means that if everyone turned up then more than 900 Subarus would be taking part in the McRae convoy.

“This is going to be massive and not to be missed, the world’s biggest Subaru event,” said one of the organisers, who added that not all of the 900+ Subarus were expected to leave from Lanark.

They have arranged pick-up points at motorway services from Abington right across England for those who could not make the trip to Lanark.

Darrell Green = Speed, Class

August 3rd, 2008 Loser No comments

As a Redskins fan, there is no doubt the greatest player for Washington during my lifetime is Darrell Green. A model of class and consistency, Green is beloved by all who bleed burgundy and gold.

I just wrote that it is very difficult to find that one signature Art Monk moment. However, that isn't the case with Green.

That 1987 Divisional Playoff game against the Chicago Bears where he returned a punt 52-yards for a momentum-changing touchdown is something I know I will never forget. That was an outstanding moment in a postseason filled with outstanding moments. The next week, the Redskins needed a goal line stand to beat the Vikings in the NFC Championship game. It was Green who jarred the would-be reception loose on the game's final play.

That punt return always reminds me of how I used to watch those "NFL's fastest man" competitions that Green used to keep on winning. Also reminded me of whenever he did go back to return a punt or something … you stayed glued to the TV.

To me, Green may the cornerback a cool position to play. Just some small guy in a sport of giants who used his amazing speed to make them all look like fools. Small, but tough (he tore a rib muscle during the return against the Bears … but stayed in the game).

That speed. Speed kills in all sports, but it usually has a shelf life. Injuries and age eventually take it away … well, for most people. Green somehow kept that speed during his entire NFL career. When he was 40, he ran a 4.24 in the 40-yard dash.

Twenty seasons with the Washington Redskins (a record). Nineteen years with an interception (another record). Most games played by a defensive player. Oh and this play where he ran down Tony Dorsett:

Nikki Blonsky and Bianca Golden

A serious fight between Nikki Blonsky and ANTM's Bianca Golden went down at an airport. (New Line Cinema Image)

Hairspray's Nikki Blonsky and America's Next Top Model reject Bianca Golden got into a serious smackdown that left Golden's mother, Eleine Golden, in the ICU.

Both parties were in the departure lounge at the Providenciales airport in the Turks and Caicos islands in the Caribbean when a fight over saved seats erupted.

Apparently, it was an all-out brawl between the families and Blonsky's father, Carl Blonsky, hit Eleine Golden so hard she had to be airlifted to the hospital for serious head injuries.

TMZ also reports that the fight got so wild, one member of the Golden team actually bit Nikki's foot.

Both Nikki and Carl Blonsky were arrested, as well as Bianca Golden. All parties were charged with assault, though Carl was also charged with inflicting bodily harm. Nikki and Bianca were released on bail. Carl will remain in jail until August 8.

Schwarzenegger backs McCain while praising Obama

August 2nd, 2008 Loser No comments

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — How many governors endorse one candidate for president and then even before the election leave the door open to working in his opponent's administration? One so far: Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The former bodybuilder and actor boasts that he's California's first "post-partisan" governor.

The middle-of-the-road Republican uses his willingness to cross party lines as a way to connect with the state's Democratic-leaning electorate. But the presidential race between John McCain and Barack Obama is putting this ideological squishiness to the test.

Schwarzenegger endorsed McCain, his friend and fellow Republican, and will appear on the Arizona senator's behalf at the Republican National Convention this summer.

Yet Schwarzenegger also has made clear that McCain's likely opponent, Democratic Sen. Barack Obama, wouldn't be so bad. He commonly answers questions about global warming and other topics by saying that either candidate will be a big improvement over President Bush.

Earlier this month, Schwarzenegger responded to a hypothetical question by saying he wouldn't rule out a job in an Obama administration. This prompted a furious backlash from conservative bloggers.

"I would take his call now, I will take his call when he's president — any time. Remember, no matter who is president, I don't see this as a political thing. I see this as we always have to help, no matter what the administration is," he said.

Schwarzenegger added that he intends to finish the last term he's allowed as governor, which ends in 2010.

Straddling the political fence fits his personality. Even in his weightlifting and acting days, Schwarzenegger sought to align himself with leaders and trendsetters.

He also is chief executive of a state where Obama leads McCain by double digits in polls.

And his wife, Maria Shriver, a member of the Kennedy family, endorsed Obama before California's February primary. The governor often jokes about political disagreements with his wife. He says their two sons side with him in this year's presidential contest, but their two daughters side with Shriver.

Schwarzenegger has portrayed Obama's campaign theme of change as a political opportunity for him. In June, he said it could help him win votes for a redistricting initiative he supports on California's November ballot.

"If Obama is running around talking about change, … maybe this is the year of change," he told the San Francisco Chronicle. "This is our opportunity. Let's take the word, change. Yes, let's change the system in California because there needs to be change."

That sort of talk rankles Republicans like Mike Spence, president of the conservative California Republican Assembly, who has accused Schwarzenegger of ruining the GOP brand in California.

"He's never been afraid to throw nominees under the bus," Spence said. "In his own election in '06, you know, he abandoned every Republican on the ticket, so the fact that he's wishy-washy in his comments now is nothing new for him."

The McCain campaign referred calls about Schwarzenegger to California Republican Party spokesman Hector Barajas, who said Schwarzenegger and McCain agree far more than they disagree. He said he expects Schwarzenegger to campaign for McCain once a stalemate over California's budget is resolved.

With the possibility that Obama will win the White House, Schwarzenegger may be pragmatically hedging his bets, said Jack Pitney, a political science professor at Claremont McKenna College in Southern California.

"Arnold doesn't like to back losers. His whole career was based on being a winner, and he doesn't put his money on long shots," Pitney said.

Schwarzenegger has differences with McCain on abortion rights, health care and withdrawing troops from Iraq, but their most public split is over offshore oil drilling. McCain dropped his opposition to it; Schwarzenegger remains opposed.

When Bush lifted a presidential ban on offshore drilling last month and McCain voiced support, Schwarzenegger told a Florida audience that any politician who promises new drilling will ease gas prices in the short term is "blowing smoke."

"America is so addicted to oil that it will take years to wean ourselves from it," he said. "Finding new ways to feed our addiction is not the answer."

Yet, Schwarzenegger says either McCain or Obama would outdo Bush in protecting the environment and promoting alternative energy.

"Both of the candidates are interested in looking for a plan and they are interested in solving global warming, the problem, they are strong on the environment," he told a San Diego biotech conference.

Despite Schwarzenegger's praise for Obama, Joel Fox, a California-based Republican consultant, says he won't sell out McCain in hope of getting favors from a Democratic president.

"I don't think he's abandoning McCain at all," Fox said. "They may have issues, particularly on the offshore drilling issue, but he's specifically said that difference of opinion is not driving him away from this endorsement."

Recently, Schwarzenegger said he remains "100 percent" behind McCain.

"That we don't agree on everything, that's clear, nor do I with my wife," he said. "It doesn't mean that we should split."

Manny Ramirez traded to Dodgers

August 1st, 2008 Loser No comments

The Red Sox [team stats] did what many didn’t think was possible, trading Ramirez before today’s 4 p.m. non-waiver trade deadline to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a three-way trade that will bring Pirates outfielder Jason Bay to Boston.

The deal, which was completed just moments before the deadline, will also send Red Sox reliever Craig Hansen and outfielder Brandon Moss to Pittsburgh, which will also receive Andy LaRoche and Bryan Morris from the Dodgers.

Ramirez agreed to waive his no-trade rights stemming from the 36-year-old’s 10-5 status (10 years in majors, five with one team) in return for the agreement by the Dodgers to get rid of the two $20 million team options for 2009 and ’10.

According to FoxSports.com, the Red Sox will also pay the Dodgers the approximate $7 million left on Ramirez’ contract for the remainder of the season.

Bay is hitting .282 with 22 homers and 64 RBI this season. He is eligible for free agency at the end of the 2009 season. Bay is earning a base salary of $5.75 million this year and is due $7.5 million in ’09.

The deal that was originally thought to serve as the best chance for the Red Sox to ship the embattled slugger out of town, a three-way trade involving the Marlins and Pirates, fell through when the Sox weren’t comfortable with both adding two additional prospects to the transaction and paying Florida even more than the approximate $7 million owed Ramirez for the remainder of the season.

The three-way deal was thought to be a very real possibility earlier in the day. It was a trade that would land Bay with the Red Sox, send Ramirez to Florida with a minor leaguer, and prospects and either Josh Willingham or Jeremy Hermida to the Pirates.

But when Florida asked for more money on top of that owed Ramirez for the remainder of the season, and the Red Sox became increasingly uncomfortable with adding the minor leaguers that were being asked for, the Sox made a quick move to gauge the interest of the Dodgers.

While the Red Sox were being rebuffed on attempts to acquire outfielder Matt Kemp from LA, word trickled out that Bay would be dealt to Tampa Bay for prospects Reid Brignac and Jeff Niemann. But shortly after the initial report of the Rays’ deal, it was reported that the deal had fallen through, leaving the door open for the Sox to revisit a trade for Bay.
