Liu xiang-you loser!

CHINA'S golden boy Liu Xiang went from national sporting hero to a victim of scorn and pity yesterday after he dramatically exited from the Olympics.

Liu, a 2004 Olympic gold medallist, failed to perform when he hobbled off the tracks during the heats for the 110m hurdles in the morning.

His coach Sun Haiping later tearfully told reporters during the press conference that Liu's exit was due an injury in the archilles tendon in his right foot.

That injury is dated back to even before the 2004 Athens games, said Sun.

Liu's premature exit saw an explosion of sentiment online.

The ferocity of the response has to be taken in the context that he is one of China's richest athletes, bringing in US$23.8 million ($63m) last year, according to Forbes magazine.

Liu is one of China's most familiar faces, appearing in advertisements for Coca-Cola, Nike and telephone company China Mobile, among others.

Some of the comments posted on blogs and forums have been harsh.

One anonymous writer wrote: 'He knew he couldn't win so he didn't enter the race. LOSER!'

Another, known as Heiney, commented in a blog: 'It was just an act because so much pressure was put on him.

'He was afraid of coming in second or third and thus losing face for himself and for all of China… his only safe (way) out was to feign an injury.'

Other netizens scolded Liu for making them fork out for tickets to the games only for them to miss out on seeing him run to the finish.

Even fellow sportsmen criticised him.

South China Morning Post reported that Ethiopian marathon runner Haile Gebrselassie was among those who thought that Liu had caved in to the overwhelming pressure he had been facing.

'Where is the pain? Not in his foot.

'It is up here,' said Gebrselassie, pointing to hishead.

But others took a more understanding view.

One of the more encouraging remarks online read: 'I hope the mounting pressure and the burdening expectations did not play a part in this.

'Yes, (it's) a huge letdown, but his health supersedes everything else. With or without a medal, Liu Xiang has inspired so many.'

His die-hard fans also continue to support him.

Wrote one: 'Liu Xiang is the best in my eyes. Always have, always been.

'I am your crazy little fan for good. Good luck and have a really nice rest. We still depend on you.'

Before the shock exit, Liu had been expected to run more heats and defend his title .

His exclusion could mean that many of his fans – expected to help pack the 91,000-seater Olympic 'Bird's Nest' stadium – will be absent for the event.
